General facts

The district is the largest in terms of area - but the smallest in terms of population density in Würzburg. It is geographically bounded by the Main, the B19 and the Leistenstraße.

The Dallenberg and also the Nikolausberg with the Frankenwarte, the highest point in Würzburg, are parts of the Steinbachtal. The districts of Zellerau and Alstadt border to the north, Sanderau and Heidingsfeld to the east and Heuchelhof to the south. The municipalities of Höchberg and Reichenberg and Guttenberger Forst also border to the west. The district has a total area of 14.77 square kilometers, making it the largest district in Würzburg in terms of area. In Steinbachtal, 4,732 (as of 2018) people live in the entire district, making Steinbachtal the second least populated area in Würzburg.

Living in Steinbachtal

Steinbachtal is one of Würzburg's most upmarket districts and consists mainly of detached houses and villas with large plots surrounded by nature and forests.

The distance to the city is quite short, but in Steinbachtal you feel very far away from the hustle and bustle of the city and this is one of the most important reasons for many people to live there. Steinbachtal is a hilly, steep district, which is why many streets run uphill. A mixture of new buildings and older detached houses, as well as a few new residential complexes can be found in Steinbachtal.

As already mentioned, the plots are very large and some offer a wonderful view of Würzburg.

What is the Steinbachtal valley made up of?

Steinbachtal runs downstream from Leistenstraße, along Mergentheimer Straße to the start of Dallenberg. You then cross the steep Dallenberg, which separates the Steinbachtal from Heidingsfeld, to the Waldkugelweg, which takes you into the middle of an extensive wooded area. This divides the Steinbachtal into two areas, because on the other side is the long Steinbachtal, a road that leads from the streetcar stop on Mergentheimer Straße almost to the northernmost part of the Steinbachtal. The city forest located there is extremely popular for walkers, family outings, joggers and cyclists. The illustrated boards along the way are a highlight and provide information about the local birdlife.

You reach the western point of the Steinbach Valley via the steep Annaschlucht gorge. To the south is the Judenbühlweg, which also runs downhill from Mergentheimer Straße and where you will find detached houses with views over the whole of Würzburg. Directly behind the Löwenbrücke bridge, Nikolausstrasse leads to Schützenhof. Leistenstraße leads from the left bank of the Main in the valley between Marienberg and Nikolausberg towards Höchberg, where it then joins Hauptstraße.

Marienberg leads to the fortress, one of Würzburg's most famous sights, and forms the border to Zellerau.

Infrastructure

As the Steinbachtal has a very low population density and only a few people live in the large area, the infrastructure is not very well developed. Streetcar lines 3 and 5 run along Mergentheimer Straße in the direction of Heuchelhof and Rottenbauer, as well as Grombühl and Würzburg Central Station. To get to the "interior" of the district, you can take bus line 8 from the Zollhaus Steinbachtal stop to the upper Steinbachtal, while the nearest grocery stores are further away in Leistenstraße and in Heidingsfeld or Höchberg.

Educational facilities include the Steinbachtal and Burkarder elementary school and a kindergarten, which are attended by many children from Steinbachtal. The Flyleralarm Arena on Dallenberg is the home ground of the Würzburger Kickers, who play in the 3rd soccer league and are visited by many spectators during home games.

ETSV Würzburg is located directly on the Main with its large sports facility, where many children from Steinbachtal and Sanderau play soccer and spend their free time. Next door is the large paddock of the riding club, where children and adults can learn to ride. In summer, many visitors camp at the canoe club's campsite directly on the banks of the Main in a beautiful bay.

Last but not least, sports enthusiasts also have the opportunity to row and canoe at the Würzburg Rowing Club and Canoe Club, also in Mergentheimer Straße near the Löwenbrücke bridge. Directly opposite is the most popular summer swimming pool: the Dallenbergbad. Known for its long slide and 10m high diving tower, the outdoor pool is a very popular place in summer for people of all ages and from all parts of the city. The Konradsheim, a residential home for people with disabilities, is located in Nikolausstraße. The Nikolaushof above the rooftops of Würzburg is a popular restaurant in Würzburg. There, as well as at the Schützenhof, you can enjoy the view of Würzburg with food and drink after work.

Places of interest

The Steinbachtal valley has a lot to offer. The large wooded areas, which invite you to go for walks, or the Käppele, a beautiful pilgrimage church overlooking Würzburg, which was built in 1747-1750 according to the plans of Balthasar Neumann, are just some of the highlights of the district. In addition to its importance for research, teaching, public education and species protection, the Botanical Garden is a place of relaxation. It is located on the Dallenberg and covers an area of 9 hectares, with 15 greenhouses covering an area of 2,500 m².

The Frankenwarte observation tower gives visitors the opportunity to observe the whole of Würzburg and the surrounding villages from a height of 45 meters. At the same time, the playground at the Frankenwarte offers a large play area with a playground for children. However, you can also plan a leisurely family outing or a picnic together on the grounds. A footpath leads through the Annaschlucht gorge from the rear Steinbachtal to the Nikolausberg in the direction of the Frankenwarte and offers the perfect balance to everyday working life, whether for locals or visitors.
